One of my favorite live performances
Feb 15th
I've been on a bit of an A Perfect Circle kick lately. I've been listening Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step (their first two albums) back-to-back, and this is reflected by my YouTube activity. I found this video of APC playing "Three Libras" live on Leno, and I have to share it. It's no secret that Maynard James Keenan - frontman of Tool and A Perfect Circle - is an amazing singer. What's more he's one of the few singers in this genre that probably sounds better live than on an album.
I remember my brother showing me a recording of this exact performance many years ago. He knew in advance that they'd be on Leno and had recorded a VHS copy (dating us both a bit there, as well as APC I suppose) and when we watched it he commented on how it was one of the best performances he'd seen. I'd have to agree. Unfortunately the YouTube version I found has been disabled for embeds, but here's the same video from imeem in a lesser quality:
I also favorited the video on YouTube so if you still want to see that version you can check out my channel there. Username is dmkemick.
Apple cracks down on jailbreaking
Feb 15th
The techosphere is all a-flutter today because of the news that Apple is finally cracking down on the act of jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch. They've officially said that they regard it as illegal. Some people think this is becacuse of the recent applications like Crackulous which let you pirate iPhone apps from the app store. These apps require a jailbroken app, and if Apple doesn't start taking this seriously they could be sued by the people who put apps on the iTunes Store. That makes sense to me.
Personally I have no problem with this becacuse I haven't jailbroken my iPod Touch. My plans were to jailbreak it when I got an iPhone just to see what all of the hype is about, but I guess those plans have flown. It's not something I ever really felt inclined to do. I know there's a solid line-up of apps made specifically for jailbroken touch devices, but I'm more than happy to stick with what I find on the App Store. I will admit that being able to customize my device more than I'm currently able to would be nice, but I have a feeling that Apple might integrate that functionality down the road. If you're interested in this you can go ahead and read the EFF article here:
New God of War III trailer
Feb 13th
So a new God of War III trailer just dropped, and I have to say it's making me excited about the PS3 as a long-term platform. This and Killzone 2 show that the console has depth, and although there might not be the wealth of games for it like there is for the 360, the PS3 might be the strongest play for the future. The last I heard developers are still working to get the most out of the PS3's cell processor, so if this is only using a fraction of its power I'll be very excited to see what we get in a year or two.
Just to clarify I'm not positive if this is cinematic footage or actual in-game, but to be honest I suspect it's at least a mix of both. Based on what I've seen from games like Killzone 2 and Heavy Rain, what we see in this trailer is totally achievable in-game. Enjoy:
Ubisoft’s XIII receives a miniseries on NBC
Feb 13th
If you liked the cel-shaded shooter XIII as much as I did, you were probably disappointed with its ending. The game was great and it definitely setup a sequel at the end, but for whatever reason we never received the follow-up title (XIII 2? XIV?). Fortunately NBC has taken on a miniseries by the same name, and maybe we'll finally get some resolution because of it.
The first part is up right now. I watched it last night and it remained pretty faithful to the original concept. All of the same characters are there, and all of the same basic plot points remained intact. It's only a 2-parter though, each part being about an hour and a half. You can view the first part here, and the second part will be up on Sunday, February 15th:
Photos of the next-generation iPhone?
Feb 12th
Just a quick post, I thought this was interesting.
I'd like to see a switch to matte in the design of the phone. Otherwise there isn't much info to be gleaned from these shots, whether real or fake.
